One off - factory built Rallye car

VIN 9112101369 USA 1972 911T coupe with California title

    ENGINE# 6840163 Type# 911/77 3.0L RSR 1974 version

This car was bourn out of the dream of Bruno Kreibich to become a serious rally driver.Born in the Czech Republic, Bruno spent time in Germany before emigrating to New York as a musician, eventually opening his independent Volkswagen/Porsche repair shop around 1967. “Bruno’s VW & Audi Repair” in NYC—originally based out of Ridgewood/Middle Village, Queens—is legendary in local tri-state air-cooled and vintage motorsport circles, the shop still exists to this day. Bruno had made himself a success with a profitable repair shop so he decided he wanted to go racing. In 1974 he supervised a build of a Volkswagen Baja Bug, famously nicknamed the "Desert Mouse."  Built right out of Queens in 1974 by racers Siggy Pflum and Fred Althaus under Bruno’s technical direction, it was designed specifically to tackle the brutal 1,000-mile Baja 1000 race from Ensenada to La Paz. It won 3rd Place Overall at the brutal 1974 Baja 1000, 1st Place Overall at the 1978 24-Horas de Puerto Rico endurance rally, then 12 Top-10 Finishes in early SCCA Pro Rally events across the East Coast.

Evolving to a Porsche 911 based rally car - between 1975 and 1977 Bruno’s VW & Audi Repair in Queens built their own 1973 911 Rally car powered by a mechanically injected 2.7L engine. This car served as his bridge between the tube-chassis "Desert Mouse" Baja Bug and the full Werks factory project. In order to handle rough East Coast forest stages, Bruno fabricated steel skid plates, reinforced the torsion bar housings, raised the suspension, and fitted custom rally lighting to the front hood. This car wasn't as successful. While the car proved that a rear-engine 911 could navigate rugged North American rally stages, it lacked the long-term structural durability needed for professional SCCA Pro Rally competition leading to several early DNFs.

In 1978 Bruno Kreibich went directly to the Customer Racing Department and requested “I think I will have an off-road rally car from Porsche.” This was a rare time where if a customer had enough money the factory would build whatever they wanted, a time when privateers could compete in the same places as factory backed entries. Bruno was heavily involved in the specifications of the build having heavily researched the early 70s factory Safari cars used in Kenya for East African Rally driven by Vic Elford. Porsche could have built him a new race car out of a modern car however he needed to import the car to USA, the car had to be road legal and get around the emissions/safety restrictions that a 1978 car would have. He sent Werk 1 a USA registered 1972 Porsche 911T chassis as a foundation to build his rally car on. They disassembled the entire car and had it stripped to bare metal. From there chassis stiffening plates were installed to make it more rigid. Then the car was painted to look new. The VIN compliance decal on the drivers door was retained - Bruno gave strict instructions to not touch this detail. Gerd Schmid, supervisor of the Customer Racing Division, oversaw the build and is still in contact with us to this day. Construction was completed in Zuffenhausen by the same factory team that serviced and repaired factory race cars such at the 906, 907, 910, 917, RSR, and 935s. This car is a mix of road racing car and rally car - powerful engine from the road racing car with the suspension of a climbing rally. An 11 page fully documented factory build sheet is included detailing the rare original racing parts that were installed. It was very rare that anyone would spend this much on an older chassis.

The car is well documented, in the paperwork are letters from Gerd Schmid stating he was in the department that built the factory cars for Rallye Monte Carlo in 1968 as well as the Rallye London-Sydney. In the 1980s Mr. Schmid moved to the Weissach facility and was in charge of Porsche 956C, Porsche 962C, GT2R, GT1 customer race cars and he was the creator of all Porsche Cup races worldwide. “It was amazing to have Porsche build a 1972 car in 1978. It was a special job, you know, but nobody in the world would pay such a lot of money for such a historic car to be built up in a rally car.” “Today, Porsche cannot do this. It does not have such a facility anymore. There is no workshop like we had in those days. Porsche have not built, again, such a car for any customer in the world. The transformation of this car was so expensive. Nobody wants to pay for such a big build. It is, if you want, a rally prototype. It is a unique car - the only one in the world. Porsche just built one, you know, and not more. This is not a production car, it’s a hand-made Porsche race car or rally car. It’s the one. Such a car can be very, very expensive. It is very special” - Gerd Schmid January 14, 2022.

Publications on the car have been published in Randy Leffingwell’s book “Porsche 911, 60 Years”, Esses magazine “When Bruno Went Rallying”, and 000 Magazine article under development now due to be published late 2026.

1981 Bruno was selected to the Audi Quattro factory team, he completed over 100 events between 1976-2001. Bruno Kreibich peacefully passed away January 3, 2023 he was 96 year old.

By 1984 the car was retired and Bruno switched to driving Audi Quattros. Bruno sold the car to team mate George Reilly who crewed for him during the rallys, George was a Porsche enthusiast and collector, he lowered the car, put track tires, large swaybars and ran it at Lime Rock for a few years.

Below are very detailed photos of the car and the equipment installed. Please take the time to review all the photos. This car is unrestored in the same condition as Porsche delivered it but it is also in stellar condition with many more rallys left in it.
