GS trim line had been around for many years but for 1970 the GSX was born with X standing for Experimental. A $1195 option

Stage 1 package, a $199 option on top of the GSX included: different camshaft, stronger springs, ported heads, higher compression - rated at 360hp due to insurance reasons but more realistically 400hp actual. 510ft lbs of torque at 2800rpm

455ci big block 10.5:1 compression 

Highest torque rating of all production muscle cars until the 2003 Viper was introduced. 

These engines were light, they used an advanced method thin wall casting which made them 150lbs lighter than the 454.
