This was one of my first 912s, when I was still learning how to restore Porsches I serviced this car in the late 1990s for an eccentric collector. I then bought from him in 2001 when it had only 30,000 original miles on it. This was a Southern California car that had no rust on it. While the engine and color had been changed the chassis and all the rest of the parts were in excellent shape for having such low miles. So it was driven and used for a number of years going to some of the very first Porsche 912 Registry events like the Benton BBQs or the Peets coffee in Pasadena meets. Then the first 912 Rendezvous happened with 45 cars attending, 912 cultrure really took off, next year at the Rendezvous 120 cars showed up and the caliber of 912s was really improving. I decided to restore the car to a very high level in a fun color with a high power very reliable engine, this was back when all the parts were available for a much more reasonable cost, this mean very few reproduction parts were used, the restoration finished in 2009. After a large property purchase and shop construction the car was sold to help fund the the new shop. It went to a long time Porsche collector who used the car while his 67 911S was being restored by one top shops in the country. The car is now available for sale again with only 45,000 original miles on the chassis, 10,000 on the restoration.
In summary this is an honest car that I have known for the last 20 years. It has had so much of the right work done to it that there is a high value in it as a driver fun to use car. The engine/drivetrain/restoration has less than 10,000 miles on it. It can be used for long distance Rally events which are becoming ever more popular. This is also the type of car that is suitable for an EV Electric Vehicle conversion as the body is in perfect condition but it would not be a crime to separate the drivetrain from the car (we also have a source for used Tesla drivetrains).
Restoration:
Paintwork - The car was fully stripped to bare metal starting around 2008. All body panels are from a 1966 car and correct to this car so the right holes for emblems are all in the correct places. A concours quality Gulf Blue paint job was done to the car completed around 2009. The single stage Gulf Blue color is the exact right shade, we used Glasurit paint. Then color sanded and buffed the entire car.
Trim exterior - Wheels are Lemmerz, they have recently been rechromed by Boltons Wheels, then new 165/15 tires were installed and balanced. All trim is original or OEM replacement, no reproduction trim was used or needed aside from the hood badge. Original - rechromed bumperettes - the repros don't look correct at all. Hard to find original Bosch turn signals and tail lights are in place along with correct Porsche Hell headlights & Fog lights.
Interior - was done by Autos International
Engine build - 1720cc high power engine - estimated 120hp, Built for torque and reliability. Std/Std Original OEM 912 crank - magnafluxed, plugs pulled oil galleys cleaned, balanced, polished. NOS Glyco Made in West Germany bearings. Engine case - blank Standard size case - no serial numbers, 912 rods, original 35k mile heads fully reworked by Competition Engineering to the highest standard - I remember Walt saying "where did you find these heads". The original crank was measured polished & balanced. Rods re-sized and balanced. Case was next to new condition - standard with no machine work needed. Flywheel resurfaced with new clutch balanced together. A full flow oil system was added to the engine. All machine work by Competition Engineering they are the best. You have to have strong pistons for an engine to survive hard driving and have it make power, I used forged Benton designed pistons, Durabar billet cylinders, Neutek SX1 cam, CSP full flow oil system with remote screw on oil filter, factory heater boxes are in place, Solex PII carburetors fully re-jetted with custom velocity stacks and K&N air cleaners. NOS Pierberg fuel pump. Bursch exhaust system, the best of everything, everything restored/rebuilt less than 10,000 miles on the car. This engine really performs and will last a long time.
Transmission - rebuilt 5 speed, with tall 5th gear for more freeway cruising. All bushings replaced, shifter fully rebuilt.
Suspension/Brakes/Wheels - Correct Lemmerz 15x4.5" wheels recently chromed by Bolton's wheels, new Vredestein 165/15 vintage tires. Bilstein shocks, Elephant racing spherical bushings, 13mm swaybar. Completely restored brake system - rebuilt calipers, new pads, new lines, new discs, new bearings, and a dual circuit master cylinder upgrade.
Details coming, it is going through servicing before final pictures and public listing.
