The 1972 model year 911 is often called “the engineers car” in that it is the very height of technology for all of the early 911 cars. The last 2 years of the early 911 body style were amazing cars that were more fun to drive than most any other competing car of that era. The 1972 model betters the ’73 because of its unique mid mounted oil tank which more evenly distributes the weight resulting in better handling performance. This more complex oil system was later simplified to reduce problems cause by people who misunderstood the car. The 73 model reverted to the previous rearward mounted oil tank because many 72 models were damaged by accidental filling of the oil tank with gasoline (The 72 oil tank filler looks very similar to the fuel tank fill on the driver’s fender). Today these early cars getting very hard to find for good reasons - very well built, fun to drive, and they are very popular worldwide.

This particular car was originally purchased from North Lake Porsche/Audi out of Tucker Georgia on October 30th 1972. Delivered in the truly unique color #025 Aubergine which is the French word for eggplant. This color is very rare and a true standout color of the 1970s. Loaded with options this car really catches your eye with the S appearance package, Fuchs alloys, original above the bumper fog lights, and working factory A/C. The original window sticker and sales invoice for the car show all the current options as being original. The car has lived its entire life in Atlanta Georgia area. This is very very well kept car with only 78,200 original. This car has never been driven in adverse weather or snow and it has never experienced rust damage.  The original owner James McLain sold the car to his son in law in 2005 with 76,000 miles on it. The car was then sold again to a Porsche collector in Atlanta in 2009 that only had the car one year when he sold it to Vintage Excellence.

Upon arrival at our shop we realized that the car was completely rust free and true high end collectible but with some tired areas. The trunk and interior compartments are free of any modification or bad restoration work.  The car has been very well maintained, it retains most all of its original trim and equipment. It was a pleasure restoring this car.

The original engine has been converted to 2.7L 911RS specifications. A set of factory Mahle 90mm 8.5:1 compression pistons were fitted with Nikasil cylinders. The case was modified to fit the larger cylinders and while in there we did an oil bypass modification for better oil pressure,  checked the line bore, installed time certs for the head studs, installed all new STD/STD bearings, and fitted a larger 4 rib 911SC oil pump. The original 70.4mm stroke crankshaft was cleaned & polished, rods rebuilt with new bolts, flywheel surfaced, all rotating parts balanced.  The stock heads were enlarged for the new cylinders, the intake and exhaust ports were enlarged to S/RS spec, all new valves & springs were installed, valve job done, a set of factory 911S camshafts for MFI were installed. Timing chains were replaced with race quality new ones, Carrera pressure fed chain tensioners were fitted, idler arms were upgraded to late style. Mechanical fuel injection was rebuilt and converted to RS spec. Distributor was replaced with a NOS RS 004 Bosch distributor. The rest of the engine was then detailed to a high quality appearance.

Transmission is a the original 5 speed 915 transmission. Cleaned and re-sealed

The suspension and brakes have been fully restored. Bilstien suspension on all 4 corners, all new bushings & bearings, ball joints & turbo tie rods, restored swaybars front & rear, all new brake components with Carrera front calipers & special compound brake pads, original 15x6" Fuchs alloy wheels were restored.
