In 1968 the USA market did not allow the high horsepower 911S model to be imported due to more stringent emissions regulations. The carbureted engine would only satisfy regulations if a smog pump was added to the car. Porsche's most powerful car could not pass the test even with a smog pump until a more efficient fuel injection system could be created for the engine which would take another year to implement. For 1968 only Porsche created the 911L with the L standing for Luxury. The 911 had everything the 911S had except the high horsepower motor. All of the deluxe S trim such as fuchs, wide deco trim, dash/interior brightwork was included as well as all the performance enhancements such as front and rear swaybars, Koni suspension, S vented brakes, were all included on the Ls. If you were to take a stock 911L engine and increase the performance with 911S parts then the cars would be indistinguishable.

This particular 911L is a low mile survivor with only 48,400 original miles on the odometer. We know this mileage to be original because we have been speaking with the 2nd owner Alan J. who had the car from 1970-2004. Alan bought the car in Los Angeles from the original owner in 1970, he was an engineer at Hughes Aircraft and he used the car to commute to work in Culver City. Low mileage cars usually have a story as to why they were not used as much, In 1974 this car was involved in a small fender bender with a Rabbi in a station wagon, Oy Vey! Alan did not stop in time and he bumped into the more sturdy rear end of the wagon. Fortunately a picture was taken of Alan, the car and the Rabbi to document the damage; this picture is shown below. Alan said he remembers the accident happening just before Nixon resigned from office. While the accident was not structurally damaging to the car it was put away in a garage because it would be embarrassing to drive such a nice car with a dent on the front of it.  Time can get the best of us and the years turned into decades, this car sat unused until it was sold to a friend in 2004 who had the means to put it back on the road.

This car is both survivor and partially restored. The entire car has never been completely apart. The doors shut perfectly with a nice ping sound. The interior is all original except for the front seat covers which have been re-done in leather. Rust was simply non-existent! There was no rust repair to be completed at any point in the cars life, the car still retains it original floor pans, battery tray, rockers, etc. Short wheel base cars are impossible to find without rust, this car defies the norm as it was never rusty. There are so many original items on this car that are a point of interest - original headliner, original Sigla front windshield - with Hughes Aircraft parking sticker, original antenna, all original Elephant hide interior trim with some of the best 1968 only Elephant hide door panels you will ever see, original deluxe carpet (you never see this), original steering wheel and horn button, original WORKING Blaupunkt radio, original dash, rear seats, glass, excellent window frames, all original Bosch turn signal buckets front and rear, the rear S decos are original, undercarriage is all original as well but well maintained. Cars with these many original parts and in this condition do not come up for sale often.

The restoration work was comprised of paint, wheels, engine, transmission, maintenance items. The car was taken to a German car specialist body shop for a complete paint job and repair of any needed bodywork. The car was painted in the original Tangerine color and the quality of the paintwork is excellent. Original Fuchs 15x5.5" wheels were restored by Wheel Enhancement, new period correct Vredestien 185/70/15 tires were installed. The fuel system was flushed. The brakes were completely serviced. The engine was removed from the car and sent to EMS of Los Angeles where it was completely rebuilt and updated to 2.2L 911S specs: 84mm Mahle Nikasil pistons and cylinders with 9.8:1 compression were used, S cams installed, 2.2L ported heads fitted, Carrera oil pump w/oil bypass added for better oil pressure, and finally a new SSI stainless steel exhaust with Dansk muffler. Recently the car was brought to Vintage Excellence where a complete engine detail and transmission sorting was completed. The builders of the engine ran it on a dyno where it produced a reported 198 horsepower. It should be noted here that all smog pump/emissions equipment was removed during the rebuild, this equipment including the original camshafts are included in a box with the car and the car could always be returned to original spec.

This car is well sorted and goes as fast as you would ever want. This is not your grandpas early 911. It will do autobahn speeds quite easily but it could also win your local concours events. This is a true investment grade Southern California matching number car in a great color with good history, a tool kit, tire jack, owners manual. The car currently has only 4000 miles on it since it was brought back from storage so it is ready to be loved and used for many years to come.
