Vintage Excellence is proud to offer another exceptional 912. This particular car has everything you would want in a collectible car - matching numbers throughout, Southern California car with black plates, correct and desirable color, nice options, and in overall excellent condition. The high end paint job is in perfect show condition. The second owner of this car was a woman named Betty. She owned the car from 1972 until the end of 2010 when we bought the car from her estate. Betty bought the car in from its original owner in 1972, a US military serviceman, who imported the car shortly after he purchased it from the factory.  The car had remained in Southern California since that time and was used as a weekend car. In 1990 Betty had the car fully restored by Ray Stephens Auto of Costa Mesa California. The cost of the restoration back then when parts and labor were much cheaper was $22,000 (double this figure today). Since the restoration only a few miles were put on the car. Eventually the manual transmission became difficult to drive for the older woman so the car has sat quietly in a dry Laguna Beach garage for some time without being driven. In November 2010 the car was purchased from the estate and taken to Vintage Excellence in San Diego for a full mechanical/cosmetic service. The car was in excellent shape but it needed a few things to make it great. After $13,000 in corrective work the car is now fully sorted out and roadworthy for the next owner.

Since this car was purchased directly from the Porsche factory in Germany it is a European version of the 912. The differences from US models are: Speedometer in kilometers, outside temperature gauge in Celsius, European tail lights (the front turn signals have been replaced with US versions), and the heating system is much more powerful which also incorporates a different exhaust system. Most European versions were heavily rotted by bad European weather conditions but we like to think of this car as a Euro version preserved in dry sunny California. If you are a foreign buyer then you will not need to change out the speedometer or tail lights.

The original color of this car “Gulf Blue” is an eye catching color and not very common. After the extensive skilled service work was completed it drives perfectly. The engine has a smooth powerful feel. The 5 speed transmission shifts very well. The wood steering wheel really brightens up the interior. Having been through an ultra-high end correct restoration everything on this car stands out. Original features include excellent chrome trim throughout, correct engine grille with blacked out background on decklid, interior of doors also blacked out behind door panels, early bumperettes with no rubber trim (we like this look on an early car), orange bar hood badge, 5 gauges are unique on a 65/66 912 (sorry the outside temperature gauge does not work), 4 wheel disk brakes always stop well, this car has the Cibe H4 headlight upgrade, the pop out rear windows give a great breeze through the cabin during hot weather, still have the original Porsche keys, mostly complete tool kit/jack/spare includes all you need to change out a tire, 1960 black California license plates add a nostalgic feel (sorry but the license plate frame is not included with the purchase of the car), wow this car is a living snapshot of a time 45 years ago!

The engine and transmission were removed, disassembled, cleaned and inspected. The service work to the engine consisted of new piston rings, full re-seal of the engine gaskets, carburetor rebuild, distributor rebuild, replacement of all tune up items, and a full cosmetic sorting. The transmission was cleaned and re-sealed with new gaskets. All hoses were replaced and a full restoration to the fuel system was done. All drivetrain on this car is in excellent condition. The wheels were fitted with new tires. Miscellaneous rubber seals were replaced. A correct ivory headliner was installed. The paint was professionally buffed/polished out. The new owner will be able to get in and drive without and of the headaches found in most classic cars.
